Fellows receive the highest and most esteemed award of the Queensland Family History Society.

The management committee may confer the honour of a Fellowship on a member of the Society who has provided:

• long and sustained positive promotion of the Society in multiple facets of family history and genealogy,
• creative ideas related to family history and genealogy carried through for the benefit of the Society, which raise the Society’s stature or finances,
• continuous contribution to the running of the Society, not necessarily through being on the management committee.

There is no requirement for the management committee to confer an honour of Fellowship each year. The number conferred in any one year is limited to three.

The number of Fellows of the Society is limited to 15 living Fellows at any time.

Nomination of a member for the award of Fellowship may be made by one or more members of the Society, by providing a written nomination to the Management Committee.

Fellows of the Queensland Family History Society

The Society may confer the honour of the Services to Family History Award on a member of the Society who has made a significant voluntary contribution to:

1. family history in general, benefiting all family historians, or
2. the Society, benefiting all members by
   • improving society resources, or
   • helping with the administration of the Society, or
   • involvement in the many specialised tasks that enable the Society.

Their involvement must be voluntary and not done for self-promotion or monetary gain.

No one may receive the award more than once.

Current members of the Society are invited and encouraged to make nominations addressing the criteria above by completing the online nomination form by 30 September.

The award winner is announced at a Society function in December each year.

Recipients of the Award for Services to Family History

This award is to promote and acknowledge good writing and publishing of family histories. It is awarded by the Society for the best history of a Queensland family published in book form within the last five years.

The award is presented annually. There may be no award, or multiple award winners, in one year. There may be runners-up or highly commended awards.

Nominations may be from any author, or their authorised representative, who need not be a member of the Society.

Books submitted as entries must be the story of a family, not an individual. The entries must have significant Queensland content and some reference to the origins of the family prior to arrival in Australia. An index and the citation of references are of prime importance; maps, data and genealogical tables and illustrations are also important.

Entries close on 30 November each year and prizes are presented at a special meeting during the following year.  Members and non-members may submit entries.

The award for the first prize winner will be $250 and 12 months free single membership of the Society. The winning entry or entries will be reviewed in our journal The Queensland Family Historian.

Recipients of the Family History Book Award.

The Society established a Members’ Choice Award for the Queensland Family Historian Journal Article of the Year in 2021. This award was decided by a poll of members and was open to those who had had articles published in the Queensland Family Historian in the calendar year. 

This award has been discontinued.
