Covers 70,000 timber licence applications (1860-1901); 40,000 goldfields miners' rights, miners and business licences (1870-1884), and 70,000 applications from 33 other licence types (1860-1899). Each index gives name, title, location, licence type, and the date and page of the Government Gazette reference, as well as other information specific to the index. Timber licences are not limited to cutting and removing timber they also include obtaining quarry material such as sand, gravel, road base, crushed aggregate and rock; the goldfields miners' and business licences include various business types, with many of the licences taken out by women. Other licences cover numerous activities: selling postage stamps, occupations such as auctioneer and surveyor, dealing in liquor and spirits (apart from publicans and licensed victuallers) and distilling from sugar for fortifying wine and even for scientific purposes!
