1906 Commonwealth Electoral Roll (Queensland)

This CD indexes the details from the Commonwealth Electoral Rolls for electors registered in Queensland in 1906. The entries for the approximately 273,000 electors cover name, title, sex, place of living, occupation, roll number, polling place and division. The index allows direct searching on name, place of living and the other details with QFHSdatasearch, a generic interface designed and developed by QFHS for searching genealogy databases. The CD also includes maps of the division boundaries.

The electoral roll is a unique source of public information on individuals. This index covers all electors recorded in the rolls for 1906 held in the National Archives of Australia and lists all the information recorded in them; in particular, it covers the Kennedy division (NW Qld; 25,000 electors) and the parts of other divisions (39,000 electors) missing from the lists available commercially on-line. Although not compulsory in 1906, most men and women chose to enrol, so Queenslanders from all walks of life are covered. The roll follows the first redistribution of Commonwealth electoral divisions in Queensland, required because of unacceptable imbalance between numbers of electors in the original divisions. This reflects people on the move and the information and maps on the CD are invaluable aids for locating them. The range of information and the QFHSdatasearch search specifications can be especially useful for finding family groups, for example by specifying a surname and sorting on place of living within polling place, then using the links between results and the maps to show the division. The earlier QFHS CERQ CDs (1903, 1913, 1922, 1934, 1941, 1949 and 1959 rolls) have been extremely popular with family and other historical researchers, illustrating just how valuable these sources are.

System Requirements: PC with Windows operating system (Win95 or later), CD drive and 20 Mb of free disk space to install QFHSdatasearch. Adobe Reader is needed to view the maps.
